Thirty-four Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduate and undergraduate students recently attended induction ceremonies into the university’s chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society during a ceremony in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.

In all, 50 new members have joined the honors society for the 2024-2025 academic year, including Christopher Chiasson, an assistant professor of practice of German and a 2025 Excellence Award recipient at SIU Carbondale.

These honorees are among about 20,000 members initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Chartered in 1957, SIU Carbondale’s chapter was revitalized in 2021 and received a Circle of Excellence Silver Award in 2023.

LaShonda Stewart, a professor in the School of Management and Marketing, is chapter president. Other officers for the 2024-2025 academic year were Scott Hamilton-Brehm, an associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences; Jyotsna Kapur, director of the University Honors Program, and Elizabeth Donoghue, assistant director of the University Honors Program.
