Flu Season Survival Guide

Flu season is never a season that people look forward to. It is important to do your best to prevent getting sick and know what to do when you are sick. Whether you’re going to class, work, or just trying to live your life, here’s your realistic guide to surviving flu season.

1. Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands removes germs, which prevents the spread of illnesses. It sounds basic, but it actually works! Wash your hands after class, work, the gym, and anytime you’ve been touching shared surfaces. Remember to use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

2. Get Your Flu Shot

One of the best ways to protect yourself during flu season is by getting a flu shot. Flu shots are available for SIU students at the pharmacy located on the first floor of the Student Health Center. Walk-in appointments are welcome. Flu shots are $25 with no service fee added, and students covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan receive the flu shot at no cost.

3. Prioritize Sleep

Lack of sleep weakens your immune system. Try your best to get 8 hours of sleep every night. If you are running on a short amount of sleep, your body will be tired and more likely to get sick. Sleep is an easy way to prevent getting sick!

4. Stay Hydrated

Being sick can dehydrate you quickly. This happens especially with a fever, so be sure to stay hydrated. Water, tea, and electrolyte drinks are my recommendations. By sipping these fluids throughout the day, your body will heal in no time.

5. Take Care of Symptoms

It is so important to listen to your body and make sure that you do not overdo it. Use whatever helps take care of your symptoms. This could include over-the-counter medications, warm showers, soups, cough drops, etc. You can access these items at the pharmacy located on the first floor of the Student Health Center.

6. Communicate with Professors

Email your professor as soon as you realize that you are sick. Many professors are understanding, especially when you communicate early. Asking for extensions or makeup work is way easier when you are looking ahead to what is coming.
