Freshman year can be full of new and unexpected things. For many students, it’s the first time away from home, along with a challenging course load and increased responsibility. It’s important to know that there are resources on campus to help you navigate the next four years. One of those resources is one of the first classes students at SIU take, called (UNIV101), more commonly known as “Saluki Success.” Here’s a little more about what to expect in your Saluki Success class!
Saluki 101
Whether you are from the Southern Illinois area or from across the world, Saluki Success will teach you what it means to be a Saluki. You’ll explore the history of the university and how it got to where it is today.
Making Friends
If you have already declared a major, you will be enrolled in the same class as other students from your college. If you are undecided, you will likely be with other undecided students as well. Either way, this is a great opportunity to meet people at the start of your college career.
Diversity
Coming to a university with over 11,000 students means that you will meet people of all different backgrounds and upbringings. UNIV101 teaches about diversity, equity and inclusion, including how to treat everyone with respect and who to reach out to if you are facing discrimination.
Getting Around
Your professors will also help you find major spots on campus. After completing the Saluki Success course you should know how to find the library, student center and student health center. If you have already declared your major, you will learn places specific to your college in addition to general campus locations.
Resources
You will also become aware of campus resources such as tutoring, technology, and mental health. There are many options for tutoring, such as the The Writing Center where they offer one on one consultations. If you are having trouble with software, printing, or need help getting a piece of equipment, you can visit SalukiTech at Morris Library or submit a ticket for help.
No matter how confident or nervous you are for college, SIU is ready to help you with this next step. So come to Saluki Success prepared to learn, connect, and succeed!
