You’ve probably been told “Join an RSO!” more times than you can count. Joining is a good way to meet people, be a part of a community, and pursue a passion you might not have the chance to otherwise. Want to make it even more impactful? Here’s the hack: get involved in RSOs tied to your major. Here’s a few reasons why:
1. Lifelong Connections
By joining a major-specific RSO, you are likely to meet people who are going into the same field as you. This means that you will have people to reach out to at any point in your career for help. Networking is everything, and joining a major-specific RSO can get your foot in the door years in advance.
2. Applicable Workplace Skills
Many RSOs offer experiences and workshops that let you practice the skills you will need in the workforce but in a lower-stakes environment. You get to learn and grow under the mentorship of a faculty advisor and with other students in the same situation.
3. Resume Building
If you are looking for something to fill out your resume, don’t overlook RSOs! They will show that you are someone who takes initiative and gets involved. Don’t be afraid to step up into leadership positions within your organization. Even if it is out of your comfort zone, the experience you will gain is invaluable.
4. Unexpected Opportunities
The major-specific RSOs often have more involvement other than weekly meetings with organization members. You may get to volunteer in the community or meet notable alumni. Some organizations have even traveled outside of Southern Illinois for various learning opportunities.
5. Resources
Other than events and meetings, there are many campus resources available to RSOs–whether it be physical supplies or contacts on campus. Look to your faculty advisor or other students for mentorship to help you navigate how to get the most out of your experience.
