How to Manage Your Time Between Classes, Social Life, and Homework

Being involved in a lot can make it hard to manage your time. Personally, I usually stay busy with daily assignments, being in an English RSO, coaching cheer, being in a sorority, and taking a couple of night classes. It is important to learn how to manage your time between classes, social life, and homework. Here are a few tips!

1. Use a planner/digital calendar

I keep a planner on hand and use the calendar app on my phone. I like to use both as I put my assignments in my physical planner and any social/RSO events in my phone. If it is too complicated to manage both of these, I recommend sticking with one and using it every day! It has truly been a lifesaver and keeps me from forgetting everything that I have going on as well as any due dates.

2. Break down big tasks

If I know I have an event/game coming up at the end of the week that I will need to prioritize but also have homework due at the end of the week, I always complete it early. This helps me to relax and have fun instead of thinking of the assignment(s) that I have due later that evening. I recommend getting a little done each day, so that you are not overwhelmed and finishing your assignments all in one day!

3. Make time to study

Morris Library is open every day through the week. Check out their hours to see when you could go study. These times are very flexible for students, so make time to grab a coffee and study/complete schoolwork. If you have a break between classes, I highly recommend going to Morris Library, to get work done while you wait.

4. Get enough sleep

While pulling all-nighters may seem like the easiest way to get everything done, you will be much more productive if you prioritize rest. I recommend setting a consistent bedtime schedule so that you are able to fall asleep easier and get the rest you need. It will also help you get through the next day without feeling tired and drained.

5. Pack your bag the night before

If I know that I have a busy day coming up, I always pack my bag the day before. I have two separate bags, one for school and one for events/games. Before you go to bed, I recommend packing everything that you will need for the next day. You will thank yourself in the morning and may not have to wake up as early.

If you follow these tips, busy college schedules can become more manageable. With a little planning, you can make the most of your time and fully enjoy all that SIU has to offer!
