What is Your Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition?

Recently, I went out on campus and asked students about their favorite Thanksgiving traditions. Here are a few responses!

“My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on TV. Also spending time with my family!”

“I love the end of the night when the grandparents go home and it’s just my siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. We all (over 21) drink wine and play board games, my favorite being the game Telestrations. It’s so fun to spend time with my family in such a relaxed and just “let-loose” sort of way. I love seeing my grandparents too, but the part I look forward to the most is definitely the “after party.”

“My family always hosts Thanksgiving, and it is full of tradition. Thanksgiving morning we all watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and eat cinnamon rolls. The morning is spent with cooking and cleaning in preparation for the extended family. The extended family arrives at 1 every year, and my cousins and I help my grandparents bring in various food. We always have ham instead of turkey, along with numerous sides. After we eat, we all play games ranging from poker to bingo. During games, we have dessert and coffee and during this time we pull out the paper ads. We all look through the ads and circle deals we want to hit on Black Friday. The extended family is there all day, and they usually go home way past dark.”

“Ever since I started college, my mom and I book an Airbnb up here, and we just kind of spend the week just having our own little vacation.”

“My family and I, we love playing games, so we’ll have like a Connect 4 tournament. We play a lot of cards and stuff, so it’s a lot of fun with the family.”

“My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is going to church with my friends and family and thanking the Lord.”

“Well, I do enjoy cranberry sauce every year.”

“My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is every year my family buys a white tablecloth that we put on the table for Thanksgiving dinner and we all write down in Sharpie one thing that we’re thankful for that year.”

“I would say probably just going around the table with my family and just listing off things that we’re thankful for. It’s a good time to bond and show what it truly means to us in our life.”

“Eating at the dinner table and just enjoying family.”

“For me, the Thanksgiving tradition is all about connecting with people. Your relatives, your community members, and it’s about the setting, the accomplishment, and the happiness that we gain over the year. At the end of the year, it’s the perfect time to celebrate our winning traditions with family and the people closest to our hearts.Thanksgiving is all about the connection and the togetherness between people, and that’s how I celebrate.”

No matter how you celebrate, Thanksgiving is a time to slow down, reconnect, and appreciate the people around us. Happy Thanksgiving, Salukis!
