Snow Day 101

When you wake up to SIU’s campus covered in a blanket of snow, everything feels calmer and a little more magical. The usual rush fades, replaced by frosted trees, quiet sidewalks, and that unmistakable snow-day excitement. Whether you’re heading out to explore or staying warm inside, there’s something special about having an unexpected day to slow down and enjoy. Here’s how to make the most of your snow day on campus!

1. Make sure that classes are cancelled

Before you assume you have a snow day, make sure that your classes are cancelled. You will receive an email from the Chancellor, and there will be posts on social media. If you are signed up for text alerts, you may also receive a message on your cellular device. Visit SalukiNet and search for “Update your contact information” to ensure that the University has your phone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts.

2. Dining Hall Hours

-Before you head out to start your snow day, it is important to note that dining hall hours are often reduced. Because of this, make sure that you eat before you go! The dining halls close for the semester on December 12 at 8 p.m. and reopen January 10 at 11 a.m.

3. Stay Warm

Make sure you wear plenty of layers! A long sleeve shirt, hoodie, and coat is recommended as campus can get very cold. I always love making hot cocoa with some friends and sitting under a fuzzy blanket to warm up after a day outside in the snow.

4. Sledding

There are many places that you can sled on campus! A popular place that has a big hill is the Banterra Center. It is very common for students to sled here, and it is so much fun! Grab a sled, get some friends together, and head to the Banterra Center for a day full of sledding.

5. Things to Do

A snow day would not be a snow day without a movie marathon! If you are looking to stay warm inside, turn on your favorite movies and snuggle up under the blankets. You could also have a board/card game tournament with friends. Snow days are also the best days to clean and reset your space. If you want to embrace the snow, have a snowball fight outside of the residence halls or on campus! You could also build a snowman and have a fun photoshoot.

Snow days at SIU are the perfect chance to take a break, have fun, and enjoy the winter season. Whether you’re sledding, cozying up with a movie, or getting outside for some snowball fights, there’s something for everyone to make the most of the day. Stay safe, stay warm, and have an awesome snow day, Salukis!
