Building Strong Relationships with Your Classmates

College classes can feel awkward at first. There are new faces, different personalities, and everyone is trying to figure out where to sit. Building strong relationships with your classmates makes school so much more enjoyable and way less stressful. Keep reading for some realistic tips to help you connect with your classmates!

1. Sit Near the Same People

Sitting near the same people in each class makes it easier to talk naturally over time. This is because familiar faces can turn into casual conversations. From there, a casual conversation in a lecture hall can turn into a lifelong friendship.

2. Be Open and Approachable

If you are like me, you may pick up your phone in uncomfortable situations and start scrolling. I encourage you to put your phone down and make a positive appearance. Smiling and maintaining eye contact can make you more approachable. People are more likely to talk to you if you look open to conversation.

3. Use Group Work as an Opportunity

Group projects are great for connection! Make sure you communicate clearly, be reliable, and support your group members. Being kind and dependable goes a long way, and people will remember that.

4. Exchange Contact Information

If you find yourself repeatedly talking to someone or getting along well with them, ask for their number or social media. It does not have to be awkward as they will probably be wondering about the same thing. It would even be practical in case you have to miss class.

5. Show up and Be Present

Simply showing up to class regularly makes a difference. When people see you often, it is easier to start conversations and feel comfortable around each other. Listening, participating, and engaging helps others feel more connected to you as well.

Building strong relationships with your classmates does not happen overnight, and that is okay. Small efforts like being present, approachable, and consistent can lead to meaningful connections over time. College is more enjoyable when you surround yourself with people who make classes feel less intimidating and more supportive!
