Welcome back! Cold weather and shorter days can make it hard to leave your warm bed and get to class. Here are some simple tips to help you power through those cold winter mornings.
1. Take the Saluki Express bus to class
Knowing you’ll only be outside for a few minutes can make a big difference. Use the JAX Go app to live track the bus’s location.
2. Carry a warm drink
Grab a warm drink in Trueblood or Starbucks and carry it with you on the way to class. It’ll taste good and keep you warm from the inside out.
3. Stay Connected
Talk to the people in your classes. When you have friends in class, you have something to look forward to, which can create accountability. Plus, having study friends can help your performance in class.
Joining an RSO is another great way to stay connected. Find an RSO related to your major so you can meet people that are in your classes or similar classes. This is very helpful for studying and making professional connections.
4. Lay out your winter clothes the night before
Lay out your hat, gloves, and extra layers the night before so you can get ready in the morning quicker. It will also help you mentally prepare for going to class the next day.
5. Keep your eye on the prize
It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day and forget the end goal. Remember why you’re here: your degree and your future career. Showing up to class is the first step in achieving those goals.
6. Remember winter doesn’t last forever
Despite the cold right now, spring is coming! You can look forward to wearing shorts again in just a few weeks. If you’re experiencing the “winter blues” (also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder), check out our mental health resources.
Stay motivated, Salukis! Cold weather won’t stop you from reaching your goals. Bundle up, grab a warm drink, and remember every day is one step closer to your degree and to warmer weather. If you haven’t already, sign up for weather alerts from SIU. You’ve got this!
