Spring is the perfect season to explore new places! The city of Carbondale has numerous areas that you can check out alone or with other people. Check out these five locations below that are free to visit and provide a day full of enjoyment.
1. Castle Park
Boo Castle Park is a Dungeon and Dragons themed park open to the public. There are over 30 sculptures that you can touch, sit on, photograph, etc. Many kids enjoy exploring the castle which sparks the imagination. The wood and stone castle is the centerpiece, with a jungle gym of tunnels, stairs, and bridges. There is no entry fee, but donations are accepted.

2. Shelter One Bluff Cave/Waterfall Trail
This trail is a perfect place to hike/walk during the warm weather. It leads to a beautiful waterfall and cave. It is 13 minutes from campus, open year-round, and dogs are welcome on a leash. You can also rock climb here, but you must bring your own gear. They offer free parking as well. The trail is located in Carbondale but is a part of Giant City State Park and Shawnee National Forest. I highly recommend checking it out for a peaceful day.
3. Chautauqua Bottoms (Freeman Street Trailhead)
This nature preserve is also filled with trails for walking, jogging, and biking. It is part of Green Earth, which has 6 other trails throughout Carbondale. My favorite thing about this specific location is that it has many seasonal wildflowers. This makes it a perfect place to have a picnic! You could also have a photo shoot here with friends. Dogs are allowed on leashes as well. The best part is that entry is free, and the trail is ADA-friendly.

4. Carbondale Farmer’s Market
This market is open every Saturday from 8 AM-12 PM. It is in the Murdale Shopping Center, and opens in April. The Market features a variety of local vendors that sell food and other items. It is a wonderful way to support farmers near you! It is also dog-friendly. The Carbondale Farmer’s Market is known for great produce, meats, baked goods, drinks, and more. It is only five minutes from campus and definitely worth visiting.
5. Campus Lake
SIU’s Campus Lake is a perfect spot to go on a run, take a walk, go fishing, or just enjoy nature. The trail is 2 miles long, including a nature boardwalk and multiple workout areas. It is also a beautiful view of West Campus at SIU. This space is free, open to the public, and is available to explore from dawn to dusk. Get your steps in by exploring Campus Lake this spring!

These locations are right here in Carbondale and are easy to find. They may be your new favorite places to go when you have down time. If you find yourself looking for things to do during the spring season, I highly recommend giving these places a try!
