Must Have Apps for SIU

While in college, you’ll find many apps that can be useful. At SIU, there are 9 commonly used apps that I would recommend for students. Keep reading to learn more about each of them!

1. Handshake

-Handshake can be accessed both online and through the app. It gives students a way to see any employment openings and other career information. SIU Student Employment posts all of their available jobs on Handshake as well as how to apply. I highly recommend using Handshake when looking for a job on campus!

2. JAX Go

JAX Go is perfect for looking at SIU area bus schedules. It tells you where buses are and when they will arrive at your location. JAX Go provides safe and reliable transportation for all students. SIU students ride for free with their student ID cards, which they must show to the driver. Check out this free app for help getting around SIU’s campus.

3. LiveSafe

-LiveSafe is very important when it comes to your safety. It gives students access to safety resources on campus. The app also provides a way for students to communicate with the SIU Police Department. Users are able to report suspicious activity, learn about ways to stay safe, and request a Safe Walk escort between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. This app is free to everyone on the Apple App Store and Google Play

4. Microsoft Outlook

-Outlook is where you will find your SIU email. I highly recommend having the app on your mobile device, so you can always access your emails in case a class gets cancelled or a teacher tried to contact you before or after class. Outlook is a great way to communicate with your professors and peers as well as let you know if you are missing any assignments.

5. Microsoft OneDrive

-This app/website is crucial to have as a student. It is cloud storage that you can access anywhere at any time. OneDrive keeps all of your files, photos, and videos automatically backed up and available on all devices. If you are ever looking for an assignment or PowerPoint, this is the place to check.

6. Saluki Superfan

-This app helps keep students engaged in a fun way. It shows all of the SIU events that are happening or coming up and you get points if you attend these events and check in on the app. You can then redeem your points for prizes. These include SIU shirts, a Salukis belt bag, an SIU canvas tote, an SIU cooling towel, SIU hats, and an SIU hooded sweatshirt. Saluki Superfan is an exciting way to stay involved and possibly get some new SIU merch!

7. Pulse

-The Pulse app is a great way to access a shortcut to D2L. It also shows you all of your courses and any assignments that you have coming up. One of my favorite features is that it notifies you when your professors grade something or post an announcement. This is very helpful if I have been waiting for a grade or if a class is cancelled. Download the free Pulse app now!

8. SIU Rec

-The SIU Rec app gives you access to the Student Recreation Center and more. It includes your member ID, facility hours, Rec occupancy, group fitness schedules, events, specialty classes, intramural sports, employment, wellness, and facility rental. I highly recommend using this app to stay up to date on all things at the Rec!

9. SIU Salukis

-If you are a sports fan, you will love this app. The SIU Salukis app shows information for all athletic events at SIU. It provides schedules, news, pictures of where to park for certain sports games, a button to listen live, and a button to purchase merchandise. Make sure you turn your push notifications on for SIU Salukis, so that you are notified about all of your favorite sports teams!

These apps will be extremely beneficial throughout your years at SIU. I highly recommend checking them out. Maybe you’ll find your new most-used app. Have a great semester, Salukis!
