Day Trips You Could Take This Weekend

Whether you’re looking to take a break from studying, explore Southern Illinois and surrounding areas, or just get off campus for a few hours, there are plenty of fun and easy day trips within driving distance of SIU. From roadside stops to hidden gems in nearby towns, here are a few ideas to inspire your next weekend adventure!

Paducah, Kentucky

About an hour from Carbondale, Paducah is perfect for a relaxed day trip with plenty to explore. Start downtown, where you’ll find local shops, coffee spots, and unique restaurants. The area has a creative, artsy vibe that makes it great for walking around and discovering something new.

One standout place is Mellow Mushroom, located inside a restored Coca-Cola bottling plant. The building alone is worth the visit, and the food makes it even better. If you’re in the mood for something different, check out Maiden Alley Cinema which is a historic theater that offers a cozy, old-school movie experience.

And while you’re in Paducah, don’t skip dessert:

  • Red’s Donut Shop — A local favorite that’s even been mentioned by Dwayne Johnson.
  • Munal’s Donuts — Another great spot for donuts.

Willing to drive a little farther? End your night at the Calvert Drive-In Theater for a drive-in movie under the stars.

Marion, Illinois

If you’re looking for something more high-energy, check out ThrillHouse in Marion. This newer attraction is 100,000 square feet and offers interactive experiences that are perfect for groups of friends. This includes bowling, mini golf, pizza, an arcade, go-kart racing, laser tag, axe throwing, etc.

Metropolis, Illinois

Only an hour away, Metropolis is home to a must-see roadside attraction, the Superman Statue. It’s a quick stop, but a fun one. Snap a picture, walk around the small downtown area, and embrace the town’s superhero theme. It is a simple trip, but perfect if you’re looking for something low-key and different.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Less than an hour away, Cape Girardeau offers a mix of shopping, food, and riverfront views. As the weather warms up, you might want to check out Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center. It’s a great option for cooling off during late spring and summer and makes for an easy, fun-filled day.

You don’t have to go far to find something fun to do. Whether you are exploring a new town, trying a local restaurant, or just taking a break from your routine, these nearby spots make it easy to plan a quick getaway. Grab some friends, make a playlist, and hit the road. You might be surprised how much there is to explore just outside Carbondale!
