Adventures at SIU

by: Tayala Keith

As an SIU student, I’ve come to appreciate the balance between academic life and the vibrant opportunities Carbondale has to offer. For me personally, nothing beats sitting by the campus lake with a good book on a sunny day. This serene spot on campus is my go-to haven for relaxation and reflection. Learn more about its offerings on the SIU Outdoor Facilities website.

Just about 15 minutes away is Crab Orchard Lake & Park, a natural retreat where I love to escape the hustle and bustle of campus. Whether you’re into hiking, wildlife spotting, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings, Crab Orchards still and peaceful scenery make it a mustvisit destination. You can check out more about this lovely spot on the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge page.

But Carbondale isn’t just about quiet moments in nature. The weekends here come alive with events that perfectly complement the SIU experience. Greek life on campus, for example, offers an array of social gatherings and activities—be sure to stay updated through your favorite organizations’ Instagram pages or by checking out the shared Greek life events schedule for the latest happenings.

For food enthusiasts, the Carbondale dining scene is equally exciting. When I’m not enjoying a peaceful moment by the lake or exploring nature at Crab Orchard, I love sampling the diverse culinary offerings along the strip—from local favorites like “This N That” to the ever-changing lineup of food trucks. For the freshest updates on where to grab a bite, check out the lively discussions in the Food Trucks Facebook group.
