5 Best Outdoor Spots on Campus

by: Cecilia Bulmahn

Between winter storms, piles of snow, and enough wind to pick up a campus squirrel, the past season has not been one for the weak of heart. Good news is on the horizon-spring! You may have noticed those pink buds on the trees or the lack of need for a parka and wondered how you can take advantage of this beautiful weather. Lucky for you, SIU has an abundance of opportunities to soak in the sun. Keep reading for the 5 best outdoor spots on campus.

1. Campus Lake Trail

This paved two-mile trail that goes around Campus Lake is starting to look greener every day.  This is perfect for runners who like scenery as opposed to a treadmill, but if you are more interested in slowing things down, there are benches along the trail and lots of trees, plants, and water to look at. If you’re lucky, you may even see some turtles sitting on a log in the lake.

2. Saluki Courts

Feeling competitive? Check out Saluki Courts outside of Saluki Stadium. There are two tennis courts, six pickleball courts, two futsal/roller hockey courts, and one volleyball court. The pickleball courts get a lot of traffic in the warmer months, so be prepared to share and make some new friends!

3. Japanese Garden

Located at the northwest end of Faner, this tranquil garden is the perfect place to sit and reflect quietly or get some reading and studying done. You’ll also find a small koi pond under the bridge.

4. Becker Pavilion

Becker Pavilion sits on Campus Lake trail and has picnic tables that look out over the water and a small beach that leads right down to it. The pavilion hosts many events year-round so keep an eye out on SIU Calendars and Events.

5. Bucky’s Haven

Out by Thompson Point, this pavilion really lives up to its name. It’s a haven where you can sit and relax or a place to gather with friends. The tables leave the perfect setup for a picnic in the shade.

These spots offer a great way to spend the warm months outside on campus. Check out the REC Outdoor Facilities website to find out more information on the available times and rules for using these sites.
