5 Things to do During Summer Break

Summer break is almost here! Although summer is the perfect time to relax, it also gives you time to do many things. Keep reading to find things that may interest you during your summer break.

1. Find a summer job

Summer jobs are perfect to earn some extra cash. During school, you may find yourself so busy, you do not have time to work. This 3-month period will give you an opportunity to earn some extra income and keep you busy. Over the summer, I work at a coffee shop and I absolutely love it because I stay busy and earn some extra money. Many places are hiring over the summer, so I recommend finding a summer job that you will enjoy.

2. Take a class

Taking classes over the summer will help you get ahead of your education. Since you are not in school, you are able to put more focus towards the classes. I recommend taking any general education classes that you still need or a fun class that you have always wanted to take. Taking a class over the summer gives you more individualized attention, so you have a better chance at a higher grade. It also allows you to get ahead on your credits or to catch up if you have missed any. You can take classes in-person or online. Check out the list of summer classes here

3. Apply for an internship

Internships are a great way to gain real-world experience in a field that you are interested in. Whether it is paid or unpaid, they allow you to build skills, make connections, and strengthen your resume. Many companies and organizations are looking for interns, so I highly recommend applying for one that aligns with your career goals. Start searching for summer internships now to find the best opportunity for you.

4. Earn an online certification

Obtaining an online certification is a great way to enhance your skills and make your resume stand out. Whether you want to learn a new skill or enhance your knowledge, there are countless courses available. One benefit is that you can complete them at your own pace while balancing other summer activities. Many platforms offer them free or for an affordable price. One example that SIU offers to all faculty, staff, and students is Linkedin Learning. Explore your options and add a new certification to your resume this summer.

5. Learn a second language

By knowing a second language, you will have many more job opportunities. Getting a head start on learning a language that you are interested in over the summer will benefit you in many ways. For example, I took Spanish for four years and I am now able to converse (using some specific words) with people that speak Spanish. It will also help in my future career as a teacher. Whenever I encounter a student that speaks Spanish, I am able to communicate with them and help them learn in the most effective way possible. I recommend checking out Duolingo on any mobile device as it will help you learn a second language in numerous engaging ways.

If you take time to do any of these things over summer break, you are more likely to stay productive and successful. Have a wonderful break, Salukis!
