SIU’s Academic Scholarship Office offers millions of dollars in scholarships to new and returning undergraduate students each year as well. Visit the Saluki Scholarship Portal to apply.

2. Visit Campus

Schedule a tour of SIU’s campus or attend an open house date. This year, there are two upcoming dates in 2024, Monday, October 14th, and Friday, November 8th. Register for an open house or schedule a visit now!

3. Get Organized

I recommend creating a checklist of everything you need to accomplish before move-in day. Visit the SIU Bookstore and pick up an SIU Planner as well.

4. Buy a Parking Sticker

At SIU, you must have a parking sticker to park on campus. You can purchase your parking decal online or in person at SIU Parking Division in Trueblood Hall.

5. Build Time Management Skills

Create a daily schedule that includes time to study, get homework done, classes, and extracurricular activities you may be interested in. Using a calendar or whiteboard may be beneficial.

6. Stay Open-Minded About Meeting New People

It is important to stay in touch with your family and friends back home, but meeting new people is never a bad thing. I recommend connecting with future roommates to help create a positive living environment.

7. Be Open to Change

Some people come into college knowing exactly what they want their forever career to be. While this is great, realize that plans may change. Don’t be afraid to change your major and do what you are enthusiastic about.

8. Apply for Jobs (if Interested)

At SIU, there are many jobs on campus to choose from. On Handshake, you can create your own personalized account and apply for jobs on campus.

9. Know How to Stay Safe on Campus

When walking after dark, use the Brightway Path. Also, the Saluki Night Shuttle is offered Monday-Saturday from 7pm-12am. If you are walking on campus at night, the SIU Safe Walk App will connect you with SIU Police and provide an escort to all campus locations, and some off-campus areas.

10. Familiarize Yourself With Campus

Get your schedule for classes early! I recommend walking the path to your classes before your first day so that you already know where each class is located and you aren’t lost when it’s time for class.

Starting college is a big transition, but with the right preparation, you will be successful. By following these 10 tips, you will be better equipped for whatever challenges come your way!
