What I’m Listening to This Semester

Every semester at SIU brings a different kind of energy. The campus starts buzzing again; planners fill up fast, and suddenly, we’re balancing classes, work, organizations, friendships, and everything in between. Whether you are walking to class, studying in the library, or driving home after a long day, listening to music just hits differently during the semester.

For me, playlists are motivation, comfort, and sometimes, a reminder to breathe. Here’s what I’ve had on repeat lately and why each song feels like it fits this season of life at SIU!

“Hot Mess” – Jordana Bryant

This song feels a bit too relatable. My life can sometimes be a hot mess between school, work, relationships, and trying to have some sort of social life, but at least I’m doing my best and still thriving. I love how this song embraces imperfection. It’s a reminder that you do not have to have it all together to be growing and succeeding. Sometimes the mess is part of the magic.

“A Million Dreams” – Ziv Zaifman, Michelle Williams & Hugh Jackman

This song speaks directly to my heart. I have so many dreams for my future and for the rest of this semester. Whether it’s academic goals, career aspirations, or personal growth, this song reminds me that big dreams are worth holding onto. It captures that feeling of imagining a life you are working toward and believing it can actually happen.

“energy” – Tyla Jane

I am always working on protecting my energy and choosing positivity. This song is soft and uplifting. It reminds me to be intentional about the mindset I carry into each day. The energy you put out really does matter, and I am claiming positive energy along with my dream life this semester.

“You’re Gonna Be OK” – Brian Johnson & Jenn Johnson

This one is for the harder days. College can be overwhelming, and life outside of school does not pause just because you have assignments due. This song is such a powerful reminder that hope is never lost. If you keep putting one foot in front of the other and remember that trials are temporary, you will be okay. It brings peace in moments when I need it most.

“Road Less Traveled” – Lauren Alaina

This song feels empowering every single time I hear it. Owning your look, being confident in who you are, and wearing out your boots while following life’s adventures is so worth it. College is such a unique time to discover who you are, and this song reminds me to embrace being one of a kind. There is so much freedom in choosing your own path, even if it is the road less traveled.

No matter what this semester looks like, whether it is early mornings, late-night study sessions, big exams, or big dreams, these songs are helping me stay grounded and motivated. Being a Saluki means pushing forward, supporting each other, and embracing the journey, even when it feels messy.

So whether you are thriving, surviving, or somewhere in between, I hope you take a listen to these songs that remind you who you are and where you are headed. Chase your dreams, protect your energy, and make this semester one to remember!
