Building A Study Playlist

Do you like listening to music while you study? This is relatable among students as music can help people focus, but can also be distracting depending on what you are listening to. Keep reading to learn how to build a study playlist as well as my personal song suggestions!

Building Your Personalized Playlist:

  • It is important to add songs that you enjoy, but don’t let them distract you from your focus. For example, a loud pop song or heavy metal song may not be the best choice for your study playlist. Instead, I suggest listening to songs such as “Ocean Eyes” by Billie Eilish or “Beach Baby” by Bon Iver as they are slow and calming.
  • Try an instrumental soundtrack from a movie. Anything that is just music without any voices will most likely help you stay focused, as you are less likely to sing along. Classical music is also known to boost brain productivity, so it is perfect for a study playlist! A couple of my favorites are “Stuff We Did” by Michael Giacchino (Up Soundtrack) and “I’m Forrest… Forrest Gump” by Alan Silvestri.
  • Put thought into your playlist! Do not just add a bunch of songs and forget about it. Make sure that there are enough songs for how much time you plan to study and that these songs help you study. Your playlist should last between 40 and 45 minutes. Once the music is over, you know that it is time to take a brain break. This is important as it ensures that all of the information that you are studying remains in your brain.
  • You may also want to try some ambient sounds. Examples include rain falling on a window or waves on the beach. This may seem strange to some people, but it often helps with concentration. You may even be able to accomplish more studying and the results could be surprising. My personal favorite is “Tides” by Broken Peak. Try it out!

Additional Song Suggestions:

  • “exile (feat. Bon Iver)” by Taylor Swift, Bon Iver
  • “Cherry Wine” by Hozier
  • “wish i loved you in the 90s” by Tate McRae
  • “July” by Noah Cyrus
  • “Coffee Cup” by Allison Leah
  • “Like a Tattoo” by Sade
  • “Glimpse of Us” by Joji
  • “UNDERSTAND” by keshi

We all study in our own ways and that is perfectly fine. It might take some time to find the right playlist for you. If you are interested in studying with all of the songs I have mentioned above, here is the playlist. Good luck studying and go ace those exams!
