Daniel Silver, a clinical associate professor in paralegal studies within the School of Justice and Public Safety, has received the university-level 2022 Teaching Excellence Award (non-tenure track). Silver developed a wide range of law-related courses over the years designed around what is in the best interests of the students, the most recent being Cannabis Law.

Phil Anton, an associate professor in the School of Human Sciences, has many roles at SIU, including directing the Strong Survivors Program, centered on cancer rehab, which he helped found in late 2005. Because of his devotion to SIU Carbondale students and the people they serve, Anton has received the university-level Teaching Excellence Award (tenured and tenure track).
Amir Sadeghpour, an assistant professor in the School of Agricultural Sciences, has brought in over $3.9 million in external funding through his grant writing efforts. For his dedication to research and teaching, Sadeghpour has received the 2022 Early Career Faculty Excellence Award.
Cynthia Heisner, an office administrator in the School of Law, approaches her many responsibilities with precision, which makes her a favorite in the office, said a colleague.
Communications studies instructor Justin Young created a video games class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and received a $3,000 teaching innovation grant from the College of Liberal Arts, which he used to bring more resources and equipment for his new class. In the future, his goals include building a cross-disciplinary study of video games at SIU, similar to how people study film or literature.

Artist and professor Jiyong Lee spends his days in the School of Art and Design assisting students with glass sculptures. While teaching at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he has been asked to be a visiting artist at several institutions across the world where he taught workshops, including the University of South Australia, Domaine de Boisbuchet in France, Fire Station Artists’ Studios in Ireland, and more.
A team considered an underdog at the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), Southern Illinois University Carbondale advertising lab has proved to the American Advertising Federation and the other universities that it can consistently display award-winning work.
Taylor Hartke, a senior from Teutopolis, Illinois, is the 2022 Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Employee of the Year. She is working toward her bachelor’s in agricultural systems and education while minoring in communication studies and agribusiness economics.
As an international faculty member, Cinzia Padovani, an associate professor in radio, television and digital media, said it can be a challenge to adapt to life in a new place, but she loves the beauty of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus and working with students and her colleagues. She hopes her experience will be helpful for future junior colleagues from overseas.
