Advice From A Graduating Senior

Being a student at SIU is about so much more than just going to class and earning credits. Over the years, I’ve learned valuable lessons that have shaped my experience and helped me grow. Whether you’re a freshman just starting out or a senior nearing graduation, here’s some advice I’d share with every student.

1. Go to class and build relationships with your professors

Showing up matters more than you think. Professors notice effort, participation, and consistency. Going to office hours, even when you don’t need help, is an easy way to get to know your professors and build a connection. If you ever do need help later on, they’ll already know who you are and be more willing to help. These connections can be incredibly valuable, especially when requesting letters of recommendation for internships, grad school, or future jobs.

2. Get involved in RSOs

Joining Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) is one of the best ways to meet people and feel connected on campus. You might discover a new passion, develop leadership skills, or even find a career interest you hadn’t considered before!

3. It’s okay to change your major

If your major no longer excites you or makes you happy, that is okay. College is about growth and learning more about yourself. Changing your path doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’re making a choice that’s better for you

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

SIU has so many resources including advisors, tutoring, career services, counseling, and more. You’re not expected to do everything on your own, so use these resources to your advantage! Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

5. Check Degree Works regularly

Degree Works is your best friend. Knowing what classes you need ahead of time helps you stay on track and makes advisement appointments way less stressful. Being prepared gives you more control over your schedule and graduation timeline.

6. Apply for as many scholarships as possible

Scholarships can truly make a difference. Even small ones add up quickly and can save you so much money in the long run. Take time each semester to search and apply; you never know which ones you’ll qualify for until you try. Check out the scholarships that SIU offers!
