Do you ever miss home? SIU is a wonderful home away from home, but it can definitely be hard being away from family. Recently, I went out on campus and asked students what they would say to their family if they could send them a message. Here are a few responses!

“If I could send my family a message, I would tell them that I miss and love them so much and I would tell my little sister that high school is not that hard and she will be just fine.”
“I would tell them that I’m gonna hold on, I’m gonna keep going strong, and finish what I came here to do because I’m from Florida, so I just keep working.”
“Something I would say to my family is like I’m doing good out here y’all. I love y’all.”
“I would say what did I miss?”
“That I love them and miss them.”
“Just that I love you guys and that everything’s going alright—despite all the crazy stuff that happens and all the stressful school work, I’m doing okay.”
“I would say thank you for supporting me so much to get to college.”
“I miss you guys even though I just saw you, but I cannot wait to see Motley Crue with you guys in Vegas.”

These responses remind us that even though SIU becomes our new home, family is never far from our thoughts. Whether it’s words of encouragement, a funny message, or simply saying ‘I love you,’ staying connected makes the distance a little easier.
